Sri Lanka starts work on two 10MW waste-to-energy plants

Postby sashimaal » Thu Aug 10, 2017 6:47 pm

ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka has started work on two waste-to-energy plants of 10 MegaWatts each to incinerate municipal waste in the Western Province with a combined investment of 27 billion rupees, Western Megapolis Minister Champika Ranawaka said.

The last administration had not solved the garbage problem but allowed mountains to pile up, and two licenses were given to private firms to build incinerators, by a competitive bidding process, by the current administration before the deadly Meethotamulla garbage disaster, Ranawaka said.

Ranawaka was speaking at foundation stone laying ceremony attended by President Maithripala Sirisena where work began on two plants.

Western Power, a unit of Aitken Spence had been given a license 10 years ago and a Supreme Court order was also there but due to various problems the project had been delayed.

The other firm that began work was K C T C H Jang.

Both firms were investing up to 27 billion rupees to build the incinerators and power plants.

Municipal waste had low energy content of about 5000 to 6000 kilojoules per kilogram compared to 25,000 for coal and 45,000 for diesel he said.

The Ceylon Electricity Board is paying up to 26 rupees a unit for water-to-energy.

He said Power Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya had personally intervened to get the projects going.

Local authorities were spending about 5,000 to 8,000 rupees to collect a tonne of garbage and he said he was not sure how fair the costs were.

Other than in Colombo, the rates paid by householders were not enough to cover garbage collection costs, he said. (Colombo/Aug10/2017)

Look at the revenue growth and PAT growth. I am optimistic that SPEN will deliver my expectation for 2017/18 FY. Now its up to Mr.Market to do the justice to stock price as well as to BW's efforts :D

Sri Lanka’s Aitken Spence June quarter net profit up 42-pct

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Aitken Spence said June 2017 quarter net profit grew 42 per cent to Rs355 million from a year ago, helped by strong gains from its power plant while maritime business earnings fell and hotels losses widened.

Group sales increased by 54 per cent to Rs11.6 billion, according to interim results filed with the stock exchange.

Earnings per share for the quarter grew to Rs0.87, up 42 per cent over the corresponding period in the previous year. Aitken Spence’s share last traded at Rs62.50.

The accounts showed earnings from its strategic investment sector, under which comes power, tripled during the period.

“Our maritime and logistics, strategic investments and services sectors contributed well to the performance of the group,” said J M S Brito, Deputy Chairman and Managing Director of Aitken Spence.

“In the tourism sector, the travels segment did well, while the hotels segment showed mixed results. The Maldives hotels improved on the last year’s performance in the first quarter, and we expect the growth momentum to continue.

“Our hotels in Sri Lanka had a challenging year despite strong performances from our flagship properties, Heritance Kandalama and Heritance Tea Factory,” said Brito.

“The resumption of full operations of its power plant in Embilipitiya, and the consolidation of RIU Sri Lanka hotel as a subsidiary with effect from the third quarter of the last financial year boosted the Group’s revenue.”

The 500-room RIU Sri Lanka located in Ahungalla is partnership between Aitken Spence and RIU Hotels & Resorts.

A subsidiary company of Aitken Spence launched a 10 MW waste-to-energy plant at Muthurajawela which will be operational in two years.

The plant will use waste generated from the Colombo municipal limits, utilizing moving grate incinerator technology, said Brito.

What do you all think of SPEN still hovering around 62-65? It is no doubt SPEN is a worthy share than this price. I feel that some waiting for a exit. With one rupee up many sell orders come.
