214 Ports employees to share $256,000 bonus payout
By Naveel Krishant
Tuesday 24/10/2017

214 employees of Fiji Ports Corporation Limited and its subsidiary Fiji Ships and Heavy Industries will be sharing a $256,000 bonus payout.

This is the second consecutive year that the government has awarded a bonus of over a quarter of a million dollars to reward the staff in recognition of the hard work and commitment displayed.

The Fiji Ports Corporation Limited has made a profit of $26.25 million for the year 2016 which is a 93% increase from 2015.

Fiji Ports recorded a strong shareholders dividend from operating profits of $16.08 million which is a 217 percent increase compare to the $5.07 million in 2015.

The Fijian government which is the majority shareholder got $6.59 million, FNPF which is the second major shareholder got $6.272 million while Aitken Spence received $3.21 million.

While officiating at the bonus and dividend payout, Attorney General and Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum said there is a need to keep money aside for repairs and maintenance.
He says this will not happen and they need to think beyond their noses and think of the future.

Sayed-Khaiyum thanked the staff for their hard work.

Sri Lanka’s Aitken Spence Sept quarter net up 8-pct

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lankan conglomerate Aitken Spence’s net profit in the September 2017 quarter grew 8% to Rs584 million from a year ago with the gains coming mainly from power generation with hotels in the red.

Sales grew 25% to Rs12.3 billion in the quarter, according to interim results filed with the stock exchange.

Tourism business losses narrowed while maritime and logistics sector profits were lower while profits from strategic investments, mainly thermal power generation, grew sharply.

Earnings per share were Rs1.44. EPS for the six months to September 2017 were Rs2.31 with revenue up 37.5% to Rs23.9 billion and net profit up by 18.9% to Rs939 million. The share was last traded at Rs60.

A statement said revenue from all four sectors, namely tourism, maritime and logistics, strategic investments and services increased over the six months compared to last year.
“The hotels sector occupancy levels have improved over the past year, although yields have been challenging across the markets that we operate, especially in Sri Lanka and the Maldives,” said J M S Brito, Deputy Chairman and Managing Director of Aitken Spence PLC.

Aitken Spence initiated a waste-to-energy project in August this year that would add 10 MW to the national grid in two years, in addition to providing a long-term solution to the garbage disposal problem in the Colombo Municipality, it said.

Aitken Spence Hotel Holdings PLC, a group company divested its entire holding in its fully owned subsidiary M.P.S. Hotels (Pvt) Ltd., on the 21st of September 2017 with the resultant gain reflected under other operating income.

Think Aitken Spence could have done better if their leisure sector performed little better than this.

There will be impact if not amended for SPEN/HAYN/HHL

Industry groups the Ceylon Shipping Agents Association and the Sri Lanka Logistics and Freight Forwarders Association in a joint statement emphatically stated that the 2018 Budget’s move would destroy local firms. A host of blue chips such as Hayleys, Aitken Spence and Hemas Holdings have big exposure to the shipping and freight forwarding business whilst there are several standalone firms of repute.
