As expected WATA has performed poorly due to very negative tea prices.

But the existence of Dr at number 2 in the top 20 shareholders list, will give some confidence to others.

WATA results are less than expected results. However we should monitor tea prices from the second half this year onwards. Besides this is a bull market. Plantation stocks should also have rally on valuations during next phase in this roaring bull market especially those who are doing better than others in their group. At least they will go up when other stocks become too hot.

So far both TPL and HOPL were able to make some profit in this quarter despite somewhat difficult situation. So there are winners in any group. It is time to study and identify companies which can produce quality tea. These types of tea fetch higher prices in any type of market. Current average tea price is around Rs.400/. However, quality tea prices fetch even more than 450 per KG.

Eg: Some of the top tea prices at tea auction held on 19/20 MAY 2015 due to quality are:

Western High grown Category

BOP Bogawanthalawa 470.00
BOPF/BOPFSP Brunswick 610.00
FBOP/FBOP1 Theresa 1200.00
OP1 Bogahawatte 490.00
OP/OPA St. Andrews / Bogahawatte 385.00
BOP1 Inverness 550.00

Other high demand tea

Uva Tea

Uva highlands 470.00
Oooduwara 500.00

Premium flowery

Makanduara and Peak Paradise 4000.00

Above tea estates have fetched premium tea prices time to time due to maintaining of quality.

Finally there were strong demand for tea in Kenya. Their tea prices bottomed out during later part of 2014.
Company, stock market, politics and the economy are four different things.

WATA got to perform better to have a bull run.The performance is not going to add fuel for a run. Even-though Dr bought. I think since he has got his 10% the he will stop further buying.

In a higher tea price environment they will perform better. Other tea stocks are more attractive than WATA now. We should see recovery in tea prices sooner than later. Finally Kenyan Tea market is showing strength and strong comeback. Global tea inventory levels should go down in 2015 and 2016.

Tea prices are about global demand & supply. Currently the global supply of quality tea is higher putting pressure on the pricing. It is now all about bargaing power of the customer. Therefor suppliers like Sri Lanka should have differentiating or cost reduction strategies to compete now days.
If we observe carefully in some occasions COS is almost same as the revenue or more these days.

Lets hope the things will improve as Tea is on of our key exports.

Sri Lanka’s Watawala Plantations invests in new dairy farm

Mar 24, 2016 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s Watawala Plantations, one of the largest tea plantation companies in the island has entered into a Joint Venture Agreement with PADC Holdings in Cayman to set up a new dairy farm.

As per the agreement entered with PADC Holdings today, the dairy farm will be set up in one of their estates through a subsidiary namely Watawala Dairy Ltd, the company said in a stock exchange filing.

The expected equity investment in Watawala Dairy would be around 1.0 billion rupees of which 59 percent would be contributed by Watawala Plantations.

PADC Holdings is a fully owned subsidiary of Duxton Asset Management Singapore.

Duxton manages assets of about 690 million US dollars, of which 460 million US dollars comprises agricultural investments, Watawala Plantations said.

“It has operating investments on five continents and is currently working on live projects in Latin America, Australia, the Pacific, the Caribbean and Africa for its existing client base,” the company said.

“The company is regulated by the Monetary Authority of Singapore and has offices in Singapore, Australia and Germany.”
