I think we are about to test the 6000 mark :( My concern is whether it will have a substantial rebound with investors pouring back in to the market or if it will continue to free-fall with everyone sitting on the sidelines? If it does continue to drop, what factors could negate this drop because as it is most of the shares in the market are undervalued as it is. If investors don't buy at these low prices, my question is at what rock-bottom prices are they expecting to buy?

Value of my existing PF is coming down. But I love very much this down fall.

Red days are my days.......

What else we should do? Nothing but to pump money to selected counters is my view......

Locals See Opportunity in $55 Billion Philippine Stocks Rout
>Retail investors say this is the best time to buy shares

''“When markets are down, we remind retail investors that times of weakness are an opportunity," said Julian Tarrobago, head of equities at ATR Asset Management Inc. “Savvy and aware retail investors come in while some people get emotional and stay out for fear of losing more money.”

Suddenly, market and crowd have become inactive. It is surprise to see even quality stocks also had a selling

Selling stocks at crazy levels could be due to the following.

Negative sentiment
To settle down credit or margin
Fear of losing money
Following foreign investors (Seasonally they will adjust their portfolio. They will buy as well as sell stocks and bonds. Just like other investors, they will do in the future too. That doesn’t means they will not make mistakes. Everybody is making mistakes in stocks markets.
Too much speculation and judgment of errors on some stocks

I am wondering what mid and long term investors are thinking about the CSE and other Asian markets these days?

Things to consider

Margin of safety
Risk involved in markets
How to manage credit wisely
Not to become over bullish when others become overbulllish
Become bullish when others become over bearish

Overall stock market is the place where investors, traders and other punters make profit and losses.By identifying some life time opportunities, we could recover losses made in the market. For that we have to have some idea about investment or business for a considerable period. Infact current chaos in Asian markets has created some new opportunities as well as more opportunities in the existing opportunities. Other thing I noticed was unlike other countries, despite they criticize each other, transferring political power was very smooth in Sri-Lanka once their term completed.
Company, stock market, politics and the economy are four different things.

Thanks Contra. Yes its true that most of the stocks are at rock bottom prices but we need to see when the future turning point to be established. ATM its the negative sentiment that drives the market directly linked with the gloomy economic outlook.

My advice for TEC members is to wait a bit more and watch the market conditions before taking positions. I would see this sentiment can continue for a while as well. We as investors need to consider the opportunity cost as well.

Thanks Newer1 and Blue whale

I think Newer1 you are waiting for some tech signal. Yes Blue whale small investors have to think about opportunity cost. They have to do other things as well (in addition to generate some additional income by investing in stocks or other assets to face inflation).

Only consolation is there is a cycle for company, market, country and the financial world. If it break somewhere both stock and bond market will dead. I am pretty sure punters and traders will become very active when stock goes up over 100% similar to plantations, EAST and SHL within the short period. They always buy stocks when they surge suddenly. We can expect more rally in the future too similar to above types of stocks.

They can happen due to the following reasons.

Speculation
Better than expected earnings or attractive earnings
More positive development for the industry

Analysis should not base on the few quarters. Long term investors always should buy after doing analysis and earnings and cash estimation at least for five year period. As Newer1(you) are a technical guru, I don’t think my way of doing thing is right for you. Now I found both value and growth stocks are equally good provided they have long term business.

WB also came into my mind.If you buy a stock think stock market is close for five years.

In my opinion it is not necessary to wait for five years in the CSE. We could expect very active bull market in the CSE again. Until then we could see at least stock and sector oriented bull markets. Those who bought stocks in advance similar to Nest, Soy, SINS, CCS and CTEA can just sit and wait. Only thing that they can do is doing more research work on them.

This market situation has given another very useful lesson to build a bullet proof portfolio to face all types of calamities in markets. Currently I have identified some stocks. As a first rule I will not go for more than five companies. If bull market form, I will increase it to 10 companies. Other thing is it is wise to buy stocks before the research reports. Second rule is never make mistakes again
Company, stock market, politics and the economy are four different things.

Foreign selling in blue chips is the major concern. If this trend continues we can see another 200 - 300 points drop in the mkt.

All depends on how players or big boys see the mkt.

@gass

not only that some cues should be drawn to reduce transaction costs related to cse trading..... these pointers will help bring in confidence gradually. we know how things are difficult to initiate actions and plans ... so thats why we need the new SEC act and demutualisation to come fast into action.

It is true that there is some foreign selling for blue chips. Some funds have different strategies. For example there had been heavy selling and buying by different types of funds in the Indian market as well during last five years. It is normal. There won’t be liquidity in the bond and stock market without traders and active funds. These blue chips have long term business model. When they become attractive there will be plenty of people to buy. There are investors in Sri-Lanka as well. Despite selling there is some foreign buying as well. Attractive companies with long term business model definitely will outperform the broader market in the mid and long run.

Growing blue chips are ideal for long term wealth creation. I would like to get exposure to the best blue chip company in Sri-Lanka.
Other outstanding companies with long term business model also will create long term wealth creation.

If you were going to invest one company for the mid and long run which one will you select now? Thanks

Sooner than later, I expect some rebound in Asian markets which includes Sri-Lanka but I don’t expect over 20% gain in the short run but there could be individual and sector winners in the coming months.
Company, stock market, politics and the economy are four different things.
