Global hotel and travel outlook for 2016

Postby Contra » Fri Dec 25, 2015 1:42 pm

•The Global Business Travel Association expects that supply will continue to outpace demand in travel.

•Industry experts agree that the global business travel is on the upswing.

•In air travel, low-cost carriers are becoming increasingly more competitive, which can have a positive effect for consumers.

•The 2016 outlook for the global hotel industry is Stable

•Globally, 2016 will show an increase in hotel prices because demand is overtaking supply in every major global region.

Middle class growth in emerging markets, and relaxed barriers to visitation by some important destination countries, means hotel growth is here to stay. Business travel is a leading indicator of global economic activity.

Sector - Hotels & Travels

Postby stocks hunter » Thu Jun 09, 2016 7:41 pm

Has become the leading performing sector for the March Q16. After the end of 30 year old civil war tourist arrivals has started to pick up. However due to various issues that prevailed in the country we never had a positive picture towards our country from the international community in the past.

However now the things have change a lot and we are to receive IMF funds withing short time, EU has removed the fish ban and are about to get the GSP+ back to the country are major positive things we achived during this period. These are positive signs and expect more foreign funds to reach our country together with more arrivals in future.

Mind u this sector is subject to face seasonal effects and we have to look towards the performance of the sector on annual basis.

We find some attractive value stocks in the hotel sector as well. Some have almost zero or negligible debt in their books.

I think last quarter results isn't that great. So some are exiting and smart ones can see this as an opportunity to buy. If you have holding power hold and try to avg down. This is a great share in long run.
This is only my view and I am holding and still collecting this share as a long term investment.

When you are investing hotel shares don't look at the quarterly performances. Look for annual figures due to seasonal effects. June quarter is coming under off season.

If you have spare time just visit Club Hotel Dolphin and see the differance from your own eyes.I was in the hotel last week end. Even hotel staff found it difficult to handle the visitors at the reception.Restaurant was full of high end foreigners, very good efficient services, very nice clean rooms, great, foods, pool & beach front. Excellent and value for money.

Forget about the share price and experiance the hotel.... You will be amazed to see it. This is a great buy around Rs42 levels.

cheers.

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s hotel construction boom, especially in the capital Colombo, could put pressure on room rates, a hospitality investment forum was told.

The island does need more investment in hotels to keep pace with rapid growth in arrivals since the ethnic war ended seven years ago, said Jesper Palmqvist, area director Asia Pacific of STR, a hotel industry market research company.

“Arrivals are increasing steadily to two million tourists,” he told the two-day Hospitality Investment Conference Indian Ocean in Colombo. “Demand has gone through the roof.”

But with more hotels being opened rapidly, average occupancy levels were only around two-thirds, he said.

“Sri Lanka will probably be one of the worst-hit destinations, with an expected increase in the supply of rooms in years to come,” Jasmita Banga, business development manager of STR, told the forum organised by Sphere Conferences, the conference arm of Singapore Press Holdings Limited.

She said a government floor rate for Colombo helped keep rates in check, but that new supply will always have an impact on a developing market.

“It is not uncommon to see rate wars,” she said. “It is important for hotels to keep the long-term view and not undervalue or undersell in order to gain that short-term advantage.”

Tourism Fest 2016 to cap record-breaking year

Postby NUMBER CRUNCHER » Thu Oct 20, 2016 5:19 am

Tourism Fest 2016 to cap record-breaking year

The upcoming festive season will be one to look forward to with the Ministry of Tourism Development and Christian Religious Affairs making plans to attract both foreign and local tourists to the city of Colombo.

This year’s edition of Tourism Fest 2016 will be a major fillip for event-based tourism conceptualised by Tourism Development Minister John Amaratunga. Tourism Fest 2016 will take place from the 20 to 23 December at the Independence Arcade in Colombo.

The inaugural Tourism Fest last December was a big tourist attraction and this year’s event promises to be bigger and better. Based on an initiative of Amaratunga, Tourism Fest aims to transform the peak holiday season in to a mega tourist attraction in Colombo. Tourism Fest 2016 is billed to feature musical shows, cultural shows, seasonal events, food festivals, exhibitions and many more attractions at one location.

“I want Colombo to be recognised as a city that comes alive during the festive season. Many tourists complain that there is nothing much to do in the city when the sun goes down. Events of this nature will not only entertain tourists but will also be an attraction for the local community,” said Amaratunga.

As part of the Tourism Fest, the Minister has requested the corporate community to illuminate their buildings and nearby streets in order to create seasonal ambience in the city. The city’s roundabouts, main roads, hotels and shopping areas will also be illuminated as part of this programme.

This year’s four-day fest will include daily musical shows featuring popular bands and artistes, food festival with the participation of leading hotels including all five star hotels, various exhibitions depicting Sri Lanka’s tourist attractions, cultural shows, Christmas carols, fireworks displays etc. There will be loads of entertainment for children as well.

December is the peak tourist season in Sri Lanka. It is the month that traditionally records the highest number of arrivals to the country. Sri Lanka is poised to record over two million tourist arrivals for the first time in its history this year. Tourism Fest 2016 will cap off a historic year for Sri Lanka Tourism.

Surprisingly hotel sector has done well despite drop in pound and not being a peak season. It shows hotel customers are not limited one country and more tourists had come during off-peak season as well.

If we look at the city hotels, there is a big change in tourism sector happening .

That is many Western/European tourists coming. That is the case even in the off season now.
Earlier most tourists were Indian (and Chinese).

So the spending will be higher i assume. See SERV quarterly report...significant increase.

(i assume the situation is similar outside the city as well)

Another two top hotels in the industry namely, THE LIGHTHOUSE HOTEL PLC (LHL.N0000) AND ASIAN HOTELS & PROPERTIES PLC (AHPL.N0000) have reported satisfactory results. In fact on percentage wise their net profit have increased by 298% and 80% respectively when compare with corresponding period in 2015.
